MLB Baseball Playoff tickets on sale Sept. 19

Playoff tickets on sale Sept. 19

BY JON PAUL MOROSIFREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

August 23, 2006

On Sept. 19, the Tigers will play the second game of a late-season series at Chicago's U.S. Cellular Field. They may have a comfortable lead by then. They also could be in the midst of a tight Central Division race.

Either way, at 10 that morning, the Comerica Park box office will begin selling tickets to the American League Division Series. Tickets also will be available at Tigers.com after 2 p.m. that day. Given the limited availability, fans may purchase tickets for only one ALDS game. There is also a six-ticket limit per customer.

This sale, to the general public, is separate from the offer to season-ticket holders, who, in nearly all cases, will be able to retain their seats for the postseason at an increased price.

The Tigers announced the public sale date in a Tuesday news release, which they described as "standard operating procedure" for teams in contention for postseason berths.

ALDS tickets will range from $35 to $110, the team said. According to pricing plans obtained by the Free Press, prices would increase to $75-$150 for the AL Championship Series, and $90-$250 for the World Series. For World Series games, 13 of the 14 seating categories would have a face value of $175 or more.

Duane McLean, the team's senior vice president for business operations, said the team's postseason prices "are competitive, relative to the other three major sports teams here."

The Red Wings, who play in an arena (Joe Louis Arena) with roughly half Comerica's capacity, would have charged between $135 and $450 for tickets to the Stanley Cup finals, had they made it there.

Prices for earlier rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs were similar to those found in the ALDS and ALCS.

The Pistons, meanwhile, offered a limited number of tickets for less than $20 in all three playoff rounds this spring.

The secondary marketplace for postseason baseball tickets would be very active. Richard Roth, a broker with Farmington Hills-based MAR Tickets, said ALDS tickets could climb to $400-$500. Sean Pate, a spokesman for StubHub.com, said last week he expected rates in Detroit to be similar to averages found last season in Chicago: $166 for the ALDS, $305 for the ALCS and $1,421 for the World Series.

If the Tigers win the AL Central, the first two games of the ALDS would be at Comerica Park on Oct. 3 and 4. An if-necessary Game 5 would be scheduled for Oct. 8.

Tickets are sold in strips only. Strips for season-ticket holders consist of all 11 potential home games and a tiebreaker game. Here are per-game prices for the AL Divisional Series, AL Championship Series, World Series and total price. (Note: Tickets for a tiebreaker game, if needed, would be the same as the regular-season prices shown below; totals include service fees.)

Rolling Stones Special Guest in El Paso Texas

The Rolling Stones tour that is set for Oct. 20 in El Paso will have The Dave Matthews Band as the special guest at the Sun Bowl.

The Stones last played in there 12 years ago and the Dave Matthews Band played Aggie Memorial Stadium in Las Cruces 10 years ago.

The Dave Matthews Band is one of the top touring bands every year. The band is the No. 3 touring band this year by an average box office gross per city, according to Pollstar.

The Dave Matthews Band's latest studio CD "Stand Up" was released May 10, 2005, and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts with sales of 465,000.

Tickets for the El Paso show will go on sale at 10 a.m. Aug. 12

Rolling Stones add subsequent concert in Regina for Oct. 6 because of demands from their fans. That’s 2 shows for the Regina.

The Rolling Stones have determined to spend more time with their Saskatchewan fans. Tour organizers for the grandpa rockers said Tuesday that a second show has been added Oct. 6 at Regina's Mosaic Stadium "due to the overwhelming fan demand."

The Stones are already scheduled to play the prairie city on Oct. 8, 2006. "Tickets ... sold out so fast that in order to accommodate Rolling Stones fans throughout Regina and Saskatchewan, the tour routing was changed to add an additional date to this tour," organizers said in a statement on the band's website.

Tickets for the Oct. 6 show are anticipated to go on sale this Friday (August 4th, 2006).

Ticket Brokers versus Ticket Scalpers

Brokers are not scalpers, there are two principal differences between a broker and a scalper. A scalper is an individual who sells tickets at the venue on the day of an event for inflated prices. Scalpers negotiate their prices, ticket brokers do not. Scalpers are not legal businesses, Brokers are legal business entities. Scalpers have been known to sell counterfeit and illegal tickets. Brokers have many partnerships with agents, venues and artists.

Ticket Brokers are aftermarket businesses which sell premium tickets for sports, concerts and other special events often above the original face value. For example, A pair of $200 tickets to a U2 or Rolling Stones concert could sell for over $1000 each from a broker. Supply and demand for tickets is a major factor in the price of a ticket to see a popular show. Some of these shows don't come around too often (like U2 or Madonna) and when they do have concerts, they are always sold out. The venue and artist is also a factor - tickets to see Hootie and the Blowfish or Huey Lewis and the News will not sell as much as much as the tickets to see U2, the Rolling Stones, or Prince.

The most respectable brokers have websites where you browse ticket selections for a variety of events. They have an enormous selection of agents, tickets, and venues to offer their customers. Many of their selections are more affordable than other Ticket Brokers which they compete. Online ticket brokers have partnerships with several agents that sell tickets and this gives them an advantage because of the large inventory they have access to. It gives the concert going, sports spectator, and theatre patrons a fair and reasonable price for tickets that are in high demand or are just hard to get because they are always sold out.

Up and Coming:

August brings hot weather and even hotter concerts. Watch for ticket sales for The Who, Christina Aguilera and Janet Jackson.

August baseball is always popular as we head into make or break time. The most intense rivalry in professional sports continues this month and may decide who will end up the American League East champion as the Red Sox take on the Yankees in a five game series at historic Fenway Park.

August is never to early too think about football (college or pro) as the Cowboys and Eagles kick off the NFL preseason at the Hall of Fame in Ohio.

The NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series hits the sold out Bristol Motor Speedway in late August with the Sharpie 500.

There is no shortage of hot live sports and concert events happening in September. Classic rock leads the way with the Rolling Stones hitting Gillette and Giants Stadiums. The Who and Roger Waters of Pink Floyd separately hit Madison Square Garden as well as many amphitheatres this month.

If football is your specialty, get ready for the start of the unsurpassed popularity of the NFL and NCAA. The Dolphins visit the Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers to start the season Thursday, September 7th and it's Manning vs. Manning as the Colts take on the Giants Sunday night, September 10th. The NCAA has marquee matchups with Georgia Tech vs. Notre Dame and the Champion Texas Longhorns vs. the Ohio State Buckeyes are already selling at "through the roof" prices.

The MLB playoff races look to be extremely close this year with key September series involving the Red Sox vs. the Yankees and the White Sox vs. the Tigers. Watch for playoff tickets sales as each contending team gets closer to its magic number. There's no expected date for these to go on sale.

The US Open Tennis Tournament, always a hot ticket for tennis fans and celebrity watchers, will be held in early September with the Men’s Finals scheduled for September 10th.
